What is xG (Expected Goals)?
How is xG calculated?
xG is not computed by hand with a fixed formula; it is produced by a statistical model. The model studies hundreds of thousands of recorded shots and learns how often attempts under similar conditions have been scored. For each new shot it evaluates inputs such as distance to goal, shooting angle, the type of situation (inside the box, counter attack, set piece), whether the attempt came from the foot or the head, and the defensive pressure on the shooter; the output is a probability from 0 to 1.
The values match intuition: a penalty carries a high xG of roughly 0.76, while a strike from 25 metres sits near 0.04. Different data providers use different models, so the same chance can receive slightly different xG values from different sources. What matters is not the second decimal of a single shot but the trend across a match or a season.
How do you read an xG value?
At the level of a single shot, xG describes chance quality: a value above 0.5 means scoring was more likely than missing. At team level, the xG of every attempt is summed through the match into a cumulative production figure. A side that generates 2.4 xG without scoring may have lost on the scoreboard, yet it was clearly ahead in the quality of its play.
At player level, season xG shows the quality of the chances a forward gets into. When actual goals sit well above the xG total, the player is in an exceptional finishing spell; when they sit well below, the player is either unlucky or struggling in front of goal. Both situations usually drift back toward the average over time.
Why does xG matter?
Scorelines are misleading in small samples: one deflected strike or one goalkeeping error can flip the story of 90 minutes. xG looks at the process instead of the outcome and quantifies which team produced the higher quality chances. That is why analysts judge a team's direction by its xG trend rather than its raw run of results: a side with poor scores but strong xG production is often on the verge of a recovery.
The same logic applies inside a match. A live xG feed makes the pressure phase before a goal visible; the moments when the production gap widens while the score is still level are the true turning points of the game.
