What is xGA in football?
How is xGA calculated?
The calculation logic is identical to xG, only the direction is reversed. Every shot the opponent takes receives an xG value based on inputs such as location, angle, distance and pressure; the sum of those values over a match or a season becomes the defending team's xGA. In other words, xGA measures not what a team creates but what it allows.
That distinction matters in practice: a team can finish a match without conceding while still accumulating a high xGA. On such a night the story was the goalkeeper and fortune, not the defence; replay the same chances and the outcome usually changes.
What is the difference for xG and xGA?
xG measures the quality of the chances a team creates in attack, while xGA measures the quality of the chances it faces in defence. Read together they reveal the team's overall balance: when the xG total clearly exceeds the xGA total, the team is producing higher quality chances than its opponents, and that margin is a steadier indicator of strength than the league table position.
Analysts track this margin across the season. A team with good points but a weak margin is often a candidate for decline; a team with poor points but a strong margin is usually signalling a recovery.
How should xGA be interpreted?
The most informative reading of xGA comes from comparing it with the goals actually conceded. A team conceding clearly fewer goals than its xGA has a goalkeeper saving above the norm or is riding a fortunate spell; a team conceding clearly more is dealing with goalkeeping issues or exceptional finishing from its opponents.
Single-match xGA is noisy; the real signal is the season-long trend. An xGA line that keeps falling week after week announces a settling defensive organisation before the scorelines do.
