What is a big chance in football?

The test is whether the player in the situation would reasonably be expected to score. Typical examples are one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, close-range finishes, attempts at an open net and penalties. A fierce strike from distance may not count as a big chance even when it ends in a goal.

The label comes not from an automatic formula but from classification by data analysts working with defined criteria, so providers differ slightly. The common ground is this: a big chance is an opportunity large enough to be kept apart from an ordinary shot.

The two concepts are two languages for the same reality. xG assigns every shot a continuous probability from 0 to 1; the big chance is a categorical label: a situation either enters the class or it does not. Naturally, big chances fall into the high-value region of the xG scale.

Read together they sharpen the picture: a high xG total built from a handful of big chances means the team carved out a few major openings, while the same total built from many small attempts means the production was scattered. The two readings are used to confirm each other.

A big chance missed is the most expensive waste in attack and is tracked as its own statistic. A team that keeps creating big chances and keeps missing them has a finishing problem, not a creation problem; that distinction is critical for diagnosing the real source of trouble.

The same logic applies at player level: a striker reaching many big chances while scoring few is going through a difficult spell, but continuing to find those positions is the encouraging sign. Historically, finishing fluctuates while chance creation stays steadier, and over the long run goals mostly follow the production.
