What is a playoff in football?

A playoff is an extra deciding series played once the regular season or a qualifying campaign ends. Its purpose varies: some leagues use playoffs to crown a champion, many use them to award the final promotion place, and international qualifiers use them to hand out the last tournament tickets. The common thread is a knockout answer to a question the league table left open.

The appeal is concentration: months of football compressed into a handful of matches. A team that trailed all season can rise in the playoffs, which keeps far more clubs motivated deep into spring.
