What is the knockout stage in football?

In the knockout stage teams are paired off, and the loser of each tie leaves the tournament. Winners are paired again in the next round, the field halves each time, and the process ends when one team is left standing in the final. The round names follow the shrinking field: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final.

Unlike a league, knockout football forgives nothing: ninety poor minutes can erase months of work. That ruthlessness is also its charm. A single match gives an outsider a genuine path past a giant, and most of the sport's legendary upsets were born in knockout rounds.

At the World Cup the knockout stage begins once the groups finish. The bracket is fixed in advance: group winners meet runners-up from paired groups, every tie is a single match, and level games go to extra time and penalties. With the tournament expanding to 48 teams in 2026, the knockout phase now starts at a round of 32.

The Champions League blends the two worlds. After the league phase, clubs placed 9th to 24th contest a two-legged knockout playoff for the last places in the round of 16. From there every round is played over two legs, home and away, until the final, a single match at a neutral venue.

In one-off knockout matches a draw after ninety minutes leads to two 15-minute periods of extra time, and if the deadlock survives, a penalty shootout decides it. Some domestic cups skip extra time and go straight to penalties; each competition sets that in its own regulations.

In two-legged ties the aggregate score across both matches counts. If the aggregate is level after the second leg, extra time and, if needed, penalties follow. For decades the away goals rule settled such ties first; since UEFA removed it from club competitions in 2021, goals scored away from home carry no extra weight.
