What is relegation in football?

Relegation sends the teams at the foot of a league table down to the division below at the end of the season, with promoted clubs taking their places. The number of relegated teams depends on the league's regulations; in Europe's major leagues it usually ranges from two to four.

The mechanism is what separates open pyramids from closed leagues: no club's place is guaranteed, and every point matters at the bottom as much as at the top. It is why late-season matches in the lower half carry real tension, and why a survival decider can feel heavier than a title match.

In the Premier League the bottom three clubs at the end of the 38-round season drop into the Championship, and three Championship clubs come up to replace them. Ties on points are separated by goal difference and then goals scored, so survival can hinge on a single goal from months earlier.

The financial gap separating England's top two divisions makes the fight especially fierce. Relegated clubs lose a large share of broadcasting income, often sell key players and rebuild, which is why final-day survival battles are followed as closely as the title race itself.

Some leagues replace or supplement automatic relegation with a play-off: a struggling top-flight club faces a promotion chaser from the division below, and the winner takes the top-flight place.
