What is promotion in football?

Promotion moves a club up from its division to the one above after a strong season. Most leagues promote the top finishers automatically and decide the last place through a play-off. Promoted clubs take the spots of relegated ones, so the pyramid refreshes at every level each year.

The system gives lower divisions genuine meaning: every tier has a reachable goal, and a well-run small club can climb from regional football toward the elite across a handful of seasons. Stories of clubs rising through the divisions and establishing themselves at the top are among the sport's most loved narratives.

England's Championship provides the famous template: the top two go up automatically, while third to sixth play two-legged semi-finals and a single final at Wembley. Because winning means entry to the Premier League's broadcasting riches, that final is widely described as the most valuable single match in world football.

Play-offs of different shapes exist across Europe and South America, some involving four clubs, some pairing a lower-division side directly against a top-flight club fighting to survive. Whatever the format, the principle is identical: a short knockout series settles the final promotion place the table left open.

The most visible reward is revenue: top-flight broadcasting pools dwarf lower-division income, matchday and commercial earnings climb, and the club's profile rises.
