What is possession in football?

There are two common methods. The time-based method counts the seconds the ball stays under each team's control and divides by total playing time. The pass-based method divides each team's pass count by the total passes in the match; most modern data providers use this second approach.

The clock does not run while the ball is out of play or contested by neither team. Because of the difference in method, sources can differ by a few points for the same match; that is a difference of definition, not an error.

Possession is above all a style indicator. A high figure can reflect an approach built on controlling the game and pushing the opponent back; a low figure can reflect a plan of sitting in a deep block and striking through quick transitions. Both are deliberate choices.

Where the possession accumulates also matters: a percentage inflated by safe circulation in a team's own half is not the same as dominance built around the opposition penalty area. That is why possession becomes meaningful when read together with shot and xG data.

Not by itself. Football history is full of teams that gave the ball away and won on the counter; even tournament finals have been won with low possession. Possession only produces value when it is converted into chances.

The right analytical question is not who held the ball more, but who turned their share of the ball into higher quality opportunities. A team with 65 percent possession and low xG output is holding the ball a lot without troubling its opponent, which is usually the sign of an attack stuck against a well-organised defence.
