What is pass accuracy in football?
How is pass accuracy calculated?
The calculation is plain: the number of completed passes is divided by the number of attempted passes and turned into a percentage. A completed pass is one that reaches a teammate's control; attempts that are intercepted, run out of play or are given away count as incomplete.
The details vary by provider: whether throw-ins, long clearances and crosses are included in the pass count differs from source to source. The same player can therefore show a percentage a few points apart on two different sites; as long as the trend holds, the gap is unimportant.
What does a high pass accuracy mean?
Positional context comes first. Centre backs and deep midfielders naturally reach high percentages because most of their passes are short and safe; forwards and wingers live in lower ranges because they attempt risky passes in crowded areas.
At team level, high pass accuracy shows the ability to build play without losing the ball and usually travels together with high possession. But the percentage alone says nothing about productivity: a team that never risks the ball can also post very high accuracy.
Is pass accuracy enough on its own?
It is not, because the value of a pass comes with its risk. A through ball that splits the defence was worth attempting even when it fails; a hundred safe passes in a team's own half may have contributed nothing to the score. The percentage cannot tell those two worlds apart.
Modern analysis therefore reads pass accuracy together with productivity measures such as forward passes, key passes and assists. A playmaker with a modest percentage who keeps creating danger is often worth more than a player with a high percentage who only plays sideways.
