What is head-to-head (H2H) in football?

H2H is the abbreviation of head-to-head, meaning face to face. In football it describes the shared history of two teams: how many times they have met, who won how often, how many goals were scored and how the latest meetings ended.

It is a standard section of pre-match screens because some pairings carry a history of their own: an opponent one team has failed to defeat for years, or a fixture that stays tight regardless of league positions. H2H shows that texture in a single table.

The recent past is worth more than the distant past: the last five to ten meetings tell a more current story than results from a decade ago, because squads, managers and playing styles change. The split of home and away matters as well; some teams dominate a rival only on their own ground.

Watch out for single extreme results too: one meeting that ended 6-0 can distort the goal average on its own. The healthy reading looks at the overall balance of the record and at repeating patterns, not at a single outlier.

Some leagues and tournaments break ties by looking first at the results of the matches played among the level teams; this is often called the head-to-head rule. In Spain's top league, for example, the head-to-head comparison comes before overall goal difference, while England's top league applies overall goal difference first.

Which rule applies first is purely a matter of competition regulations and differs from tournament to tournament. In end-of-season scenarios the detail can be decisive: which of two level teams finishes higher may hang on the outcome of their two meetings.
