What is a fixture in football?

A fixture is a scheduled match: a fixed pairing of two teams on a set date at a set ground. The fixture list is the season's full programme, showing every round in advance. Fans use the word both ways, asking about today's fixtures as naturally as about a single big fixture ahead.

The fixture list is the skeleton of a season. Clubs build travel, training and rotation plans around it, and supporters plan away days from it. Published before the season starts, it reveals from day one which weeks will matter most, since the placement of derbies and difficult away runs sets the campaign's rhythm.

The word comes from the ordinary English sense of something fixed in place. In sporting use, a fixture was an event fixed to a date in the calendar, and British sport has used the term this way since the nineteenth century. A football fixture is simply a match whose date, opponents and venue have been set in advance.

That origin explains the word's range: a fixture can be next Saturday's match, and the fixture list the whole season's diary. Related phrases follow the same logic, from fixture congestion, meaning too many matches in too few days, to fixture release day, when leagues publish the new season's programme.

Modern leagues generate fixtures by computer under many constraints at once: home and away matches must alternate fairly, clubs sharing a city or stadium should not host on the same weekend, and policing, travel and stadium availability all apply. Derbies are spread across the season, and clubs in European competition get workable gaps around their continental dates.

Even after release the programme keeps moving. Broadcasters shift matches to new days and kick-off times, cup replays and postponements force rearrangements, and weather or security can move games at short notice. A fixture list is best read as a living document rather than a finished timetable.
